Mold or mildew can affect any part of your home. The following are some recommendations to help you clean your home to prevent and successfully get rid of mold and mildew.

Keep Surfaces Dry and Clean

After you shower or bathe in your bathroom there is a large amount of moisture in the air and on surfaces inside your bathroom. All this excess moisture needs to evaporate and so it will end up in the air as a result. Running your bathroom ventilation will remove the humidity from the air to the outside air. However, if you don't keep it on continually, the excess moisture on surfaces in your bathroom will also replace it within the air. Excess humidity in your bathroom and home will result in mold and mildew growth, so take some extra measures to reduce this occurrence.

Keep a bathroom squeegee in your shower or tub for you to use after you bathe. Run the squeegee down the sides of the shower and tub to move the water droplets into the drain. This will reduce a great amount of humidity in your home and also dry your bathroom surfaces to prevent mildew growth. Then, when you clean your shower and bathtub, use a spray bottle filled with white vinegar to clean off mold and mildew growth. Or if you prefer, consider using more harsh chemicals as a cleaner to kill off the mold growth.

Manage Mold Growth Immediately

As soon as you discover any mold growth, whether it is on your tile grout or in a closet wall, you should take action immediately. The longer the mold is growing inside your home, the more you and your family will be exposed to the harmful spores and their resulting ill effects. As a general recommendation by the CDC, if the mold growth covers an area that is smaller than ten square feet, you can handle the clean-up on your own with the proper protective gear.

If the mold growth covers an area that is larger than ten square feet, you need to work with a professional mold remediation company. A mold removal company has the proper equipment, such as respirators and protective suits to clean up and remove the mold-damaged materials. They will remove and bag up mold-infested items and wet them down to reduce mold spores become airborne in the process.
